Genny Beemyn is a trans educator, author, speaker, and consultant. They have been the director of the UMass Amherst Stonewall Center since 2006 and the coordinator of Campus Pride’s Trans Policy Clearinghouse since 2012. Genny is also the co-editor of the recently published The SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies and an associate editor of the forthcoming 2nd edition of The SAGE Encyclopedia of LGBTQ Studies.

Some of Genny’s claims to fame:

  • They worked with the Common App (the admissions form used by 1,000+ colleges) to make it more trans-inclusive and are the first researcher to analyze their data on gender identity and pronouns. Their findings are on the Research page.
  • In 1996, Genny successfully advocated for the University of Iowa to add “gender identity” to its nondiscrimination policy, making it the first college in the U.S. to have any kind of trans-supportive policy.
  • Since then, Genny has directly assisted hundreds of colleges in formulating and implementing trans-inclusive policies.
  • They wrote some of the first articles on the experiences and needs of trans college students, in the 2000s.
  • In 2001, they became one of the first out nonbinary trans college administrators when they were hired to direct Ohio State’s LGBTQ student services office.
  • Genny helped create the Campus Pride Index of LGBTQ+-supportive colleges and has served on its advisory board since then. 
  • They conducted the first national study of nonbinary trans college students in 2014.
  • In 2016, they co-developed and began co-teaching Queer Lights, the first LGBTQIA-themed Engineering course in the country.
  • In 2018, they were the founding co-chair of International Pronouns Day.

For Pride Month, Genny was interviewed by CBS News on how colleges support/fail to support LGBTQ+ students and what students can do if their schools are unsupportive.

In 2021, Genny joined other experts to talk about trans rights priorities for the Biden Administration.
